What is hyperventilation syndrome?

Hyperventilation syndrome is a group of syndromes caused by hyperventilation in excess of physiologic and metabolic needs. Hyperventilation syndrome is commonly a physical and psychological reaction caused by acute anxiety or dysthymia. When it occurs, the patient feels a rapid heartbeat, palpitations and sweating. Due to the self-perceived respiratory disorder, there is accelerated breathing, hyperventilation resulting in carbon dioxide being constantly expelled and the concentration being too low, respiratory alkalosis and other symptoms such as shortness of breath, abnormal sensations in the limbs, dizziness, blurred vision, dry throat, and even impaired consciousness and convulsions. The attack is terminated after quietness. Hyperventilation syndrome is common in women. When the above conditions occur, it is recommended to seek prompt medical attention and active treatment.
