The cause and pathogenesis of cleft palate is not yet fully understood, but there is a known genetic link.
Patients with cleft palate have been seen to develop similar deformities in their immediate or collateral relatives, but it does not necessarily follow that if the father or mother has cleft palate, the child will have the condition.
