The goal of treatment for vomiting is to correct the cause and its main treatments are etiological and symptomatic. As there are many causes of vomiting, identifying the cause and actively treating the primary cause is the key to treatment. It is impossible to say exactly which treatment is the best.
It is important to find the cause as soon as possible and treat the primary disease causing vomiting accordingly. Common treatment modalities are as follows: maintenance of stable baseline vital signs, reduction of intracranial pressure, hepatoprotection to lower transaminases, hypoglycaemia, reduction of gastric acid secretion, anti-infection, emergency dialysis and surgery for gastrointestinal obstruction if necessary. Clinical treatment of vomiting is mainly symptomatic. The most effective way to control the symptoms of vomiting is currently with medication: commonly used are antihistamines, phenothiazines, benzamides and selective 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor antagonists.
