Intermittent otalgia is uninterrupted ear pain, the pain is not continuous but intermittent and is caused by wind-heat in the liver and gallbladder meridians, with dryness and itching in the ear. Treatment is to remove wind-heat and clear heat. Use Liang Di Di San plus or minus. If the ear pain is caused by fiery toxins, the ear pain is more intense and may be accompanied by red heat and swelling. How should intermittent ear pain be differentially diagnosed? 1. Boils in the external ear canal: When otitis externa is not treated in time, or when the skin of the ear canal is impregnated with water for a long time, or when the resistance of the skin surface is weakened, boils in the ear canal are often prone to occur, which will gradually swell and become pus, blocking the ear canal and causing pain. 2. Acute otitis media: When bacterial infection occurs in the middle ear cavity, the pus increases and directly presses on the pain-sensitive eardrum, causing bouts of pain in the ear, which can be pulsating pain. 3. Ear herpes: This is related to viral infection and is more common in the auricle. The ear pain caused is like pins and needles or burning, and a few people may also have facial nerve paralysis, hearing loss, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. 4. Earwax: It is commonly known as “earwax” and is produced by the cerumen glands under the skin of the ear canal. When cerumen accumulates, it can block the ear canal, and hearing can be affected. Once water enters the ear canal, the cerumen will swell and tightly compress the ear canal, causing ear pain. 5.Ear tumor: When a malignant cancer grows in the ear canal or middle ear cavity, as the disease develops, there will be bleeding from the ear canal and hearing loss, and there will also be ear pain of varying degrees. 6.Ear neuralgia: There are more nerves around the ear, so when it is stimulated by strong and prolonged noise or unexplained stimulation, there will often be bouts of ear pain, which usually comes and goes and is often tolerable, but no lesion can be found during the examination.
