Why does high decibels cause pain in the ear?

Sound waves from the outside world are collected by the auricle and transmitted from the outer ear to the middle ear, causing the eardrum to vibrate, which is then transmitted to the inner ear and central nerve in turn to produce hearing. Prolonged high decibel and high volume levels, which make the tympanic membrane vibrate violently, may also cause damage or even perforation of the tympanic membrane, causing ear pain.
