What is a ventricular septal defect?

Ventricular septal defect is a common congenital heart malformation. The ventricles can be divided into two parts by the septum, and a ventricular septal defect can be understood in layman’s terms as a failure to grow the septum between the left and right ventricles, resulting in an abnormal shunt of blood flow between the left and right ventricles, which should not be connected, leading to a range of related problems.
