Can ventricular septal defects heal themselves?

Ventricular septal defects have a high rate of spontaneous closure, and some children with small defects, particularly membranous and myocardial restrictive septal defects, are likely to heal spontaneously in childhood.
However, larger defects that are difficult to grow out of over a long period of time, or in combination with other cardiac malformations, are difficult to heal spontaneously and require reasonable invasive treatment.
