What to do if a pregnant woman has sciatica

The cause of sciatica in pregnant women needs to be identified. Physiological causes can be minimized by reducing activities and resting in bed. Pathologic causes of sciatica can be treated with medication and, if necessary, postpartum surgery. 1. Physiological causes: with the increase of pregnancy weeks, the enlarged uterus and the pressure of the fetus on the pelvic floor tissues will be aggravated, which may also compress the sciatic nerve and cause pain. If lumbar spine pathology is ruled out in the imaging examination, the doctor’s advice can be followed to reduce the appropriate activities and standing for a long time, to change the position, and to rest in bed appropriately. 2. Pathological causes: most common in people with a history of lumbar spine disease, lumbar spine weight-bearing increase after pregnancy, can aggravate the underlying lumbar spine disease, lumbago, leg pain and sciatica can occur. The diagnosis can be assisted by medical history, bed rest and reduced activity as prescribed by the doctor. For severe pain, drugs such as ibuprofen can be given appropriately for pain relief, and surgical treatment can be given after delivery. When a pregnant woman has sciatica, she needs to go to the hospital in time to find out the cause and deal with it actively.
