How long to abstain from inguinal hernia surgery

Sexual intercourse is not allowed for 2-3 months after inguinal hernia surgery to avoid recurrence of the hernia due to increased abdominal pressure. A hernia is a mass formed by the protrusion of intra-abdominal organs to the body surface through a defect in the inguinal region, mostly due to increased intra-abdominal pressure or abdominal wall defect, so any factor that increases intra-abdominal pressure can induce or aggravate the occurrence of a hernia. Surgery is the only effective treatment for hernias, and mostly synthetic mesh is used for hernia repair. The mesh can only fuse with the surrounding tissue about 1 month after surgery and grow firmly after 2-3 months before the patient can have sex. Therefore, patients undergoing surgical treatment of inguinal hernia should abstain from sex for 2-3 months to effectively prevent recurrence of the hernia. In addition, heavy physical labor, pregnancy, defecation, coughing, constipation and other actions that increase negative pressure can lead to the development of a hernia, and patients are advised to avoid them as much as possible in their lives.
