According to the theory of Chinese medicine, there are five organs and six internal organs. The five viscera are kidney, heart, liver, spleen and lung; the six internal organs are stomach, large intestine, small intestine, bladder, gall bladder and Sanjiao. The five viscera are the center of the body’s vital activities, the six internal organs cooperate with it, and through the meridians and run the qi and blood, coordinate yin and yang, contact the limbs and bones, skin and tendons, muscles and blood, five organs and nine orifices, etc., so that it becomes a unified whole. The ear is one of the five senses, with the ear shell exposed on the side of the head and the ear orifice connected to the brain. The physiological functions of the ear, as well as the pathological diseases, are related to the internal organs. 1. Kidney: The ear is the master of the kidney. Kidney Qi passes through the ear. Only when the kidney is full and the essence is harmonized can the ear exercise its normal physiological functions. On the contrary, if the kidney essence is deficient, the medulla oblongata is insufficient, and the ear orifices are not honored, there will be a series of symptoms such as balance and sensory disorders, such as spinning, turmoil, tinnitus, deafness and vomiting. Clinically, the pathological changes of kidney dysfunction mostly produce deficiency symptoms such as tinnitus, deafness, vertigo, swelling and congestion in the ear, and pus in the ear for a long time. 2. Heart: The ear is the orifice of the kidney and the odd orifice of the heart. The heart is the master of fire and the kidney is the master of water. If the heart and kidney are out of balance, the kidney water is deficient and the heart fire is hyperactive; or if the heart blood is insufficient and does not glory in the ear, it can lead to ear disease. As the ancients say, “Sadness and contemplation are sad, and heart deficiency and blood depletion will lead to deafness and tinnitus.” 3. Liver: Chinese medicine has a saying that “liver and kidney are of the same origin”, and the two are closely related to each other in physiological aspects. The liver needs the nourishment of kidney yin to maintain the balance of yin and yang; conversely, the water and grain essence needs to be drained by the liver in order to continuously produce kidney yang. The close relationship between liver and kidney constitutes a certain connection between the ear and the liver. The main manifestation of this is that only when the liver qi is well regulated and the yin and yang are in balance can we keep the auditory compartment clear and the ears clear and the brain calm. Conversely, if liver qi is rebellious, yin deficiency and liver vigor will cause hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo. 4. The spleen: The spleen is the source of the posterior, the source of biochemical energy and blood. The function of the ear is related to the spleen. If the spleen is strong, the source of biochemical energy is sufficient, transportation and transformation are powerful, clear qi rises and turbid yin falls, the ear orifices are nourished and clear, and hearing is smart and disease free. If the Spleen Qi is deficient and cannot be served in the ears, the ears are prone to disease, causing tinnitus and vertigo. 5. Lung: The ear and the lung also have a certain relationship. Clinically, at the beginning of an ear disease, there are often symptoms of the lung meridian where the evil is on the surface of the body. Therefore, it is one-sided to think that tinnitus is caused by kidney deficiency, and sometimes some patients tend to abuse kidney tonics, which may delay the condition. The four diagnoses should be taken together and the treatment should be based on evidence.
