In the case of nosebleeds, if the amount of bleeding is small, topical compression with Yunnan Baiyao can be applied for about 5-10 minutes to gradually stop the bleeding. Patients should also use cold towels on the forehead and back of the head to stop the bleeding. It is advisable for the patient to go to the hospital for an electronic rhinoscopy to find and clarify the bleeding point and the cause of the bleeding. The bleeding site is usually in the lower anterior part of the nasal septum or the anterior part of the inferior turbinate, and is caused by rupture of the nasal mucosa due to prolonged nose-digging, nose picking, high blood pressure, or nasal trauma. If the bleeding is small, local compression or laser electrocoagulation can be used to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding is heavy, surgical treatment may be necessary. The procedure can be performed by ligation of the external carotid artery or embolization under vascular intervention to stop the bleeding.
