Orthodontics for “young and old”

Many people know that orthodontics should be orthodontic treatment at the age of twelve or three, but they do not know that orthodontic treatment is also available for adults and even the elderly. According to foreign research studies, the proportion of adult orthodontics accounts for about 20%-30%. Theoretically, there is no strict age limit for orthodontic treatment of misshapen jaws. As long as the periodontal tissue and jaw bone are in normal physiological and anatomical state, teeth can be moved in the alveolar bone under the action of orthodontic force to correct the malocclusion. Children are at the stage of growth and development, the dental and jaw organs have greater plasticity, respond well to orthodontic forces, teeth can move more smoothly, so the orthodontic effect is good, the course of treatment is relatively short, the orthodontic effect is also relatively stable, is a good time to correct a variety of dental and jaw malocclusion. Some adults miss the best time for orthodontic treatment due to lack of knowledge or lack of conditions for orthodontic treatment in childhood, but as long as the periodontal health, satisfactory results can be achieved through orthodontic treatment. The orthodontic treatment means and goals of adult orthodontics are different from those of children, and require close cooperation between various specialties of dentistry. Therefore, the technical requirements of adult orthodontics are higher. In addition, certain hereditary deformities, such as “geodesic”, must wait until the adult orthodontic treatment, the effect can be stable. In developed countries, many elderly people also undergo orthodontic treatment, which is due to, on the one hand, their oral health care awareness is stronger, attach great importance to oral function and cosmetic improvement, on the other hand, is also in order to cooperate with oral prosthetics or periodontal disease treatment needs. It is believed that with the improvement of people’s living standard and the popularization of orthodontic knowledge, adult orthodontics will also develop rapidly.
