Why do some malocclusions require extractions?

When many people talk to their doctor about their treatment plan and hear that healthy teeth will need to be extracted for orthodontic treatment, they almost always have the same reaction, “Can I do it without extractions?” The purpose of orthodontic extractions is to improve the patient’s appearance and bite function. As a matter of fact, doctors do not want to extract the patient’s teeth, but they have no choice but to reduce the number of teeth in order to align the teeth in the limited space of the jawbone and not to allow the front teeth to protrude. As for the space after extraction, it is either for aligning the teeth or letting the front teeth recede to improve the shape of the lips, but none of them will leave a gap after the treatment. Therefore, sacrificing less important teeth for improved appearance and normal bite function is actually a very normal choice.
