What is vitreous opacity?

The vitreous humor is the contents located in the middle and posterior segment of the eye. It is normally in the form of a clear gel. It is composed of 99% water and small amounts of collagen and hyaluronic acid. The vitreous body has important refractive functions and supports the eye.

What is vitreous opacity? In pathological conditions, the vitreous disrupts in its gel state and becomes liquid. This condition is medically known as vitreous liquefaction and is a degenerative process of the vitreous body. Hyaluronic acid undergoes depolymerization due to metabolic and photochemical effects, collapse and concentration of the collagen fiber scaffold, and water analysis. At the same time, the transparency of the vitreous changes due to coagulation of solid components or the invasion of blood and other tangible components, resulting in the appearance of an opaque body, called vitreous opacity.

How is vitreous opacity caused?

Vitreous turbidity is not just a disease, but can be caused by a variety of conditions. The most common are senile degeneration, myopic changes, posterior vitreous detachment and physiological mosquitoes, in addition to retinal detachment, uveitis, primary familial amyloidosis, flash vitreous liquefaction, etc. It can be caused by inflammation, hemorrhage, trauma and degeneration, or due to systemic diseases or intraocular tumors, the diagnosis is not difficult.
