Cleft lip and cleft palate are congenital malformations of the mouth and face, commonly known as “hare lip” and “lupus”. Cleft lip is caused by unfused frontal nasal and lateral upper frontal wings about 6 weeks after conception. Simple cleft palate is caused by the fusion of the palatal wings at 8-9 weeks of gestation. The causative factors of congenital cleft lip and palate deformities are diverse and it may be the result of multiple factors acting at the same time or at different times. The following factors are currently considered to be involved: genetic factors, infections and injuries, endocrine factors, pharmacological factors, physical factors and research. Since the etiology is unknown, it is essential to take active preventive measures in the early stages of pregnancy, especially before the 12th week of pregnancy. The incidence varies from country to country, with the Japanese having a prevalence of 2.13/1000; blacks have the lowest incidence of 1/1000 to 3800. in modern society, with the increase in industrialization, the incidence is on the rise. The incidence of cleft lip and palate in China is currently recognized as l.25 to l.38/1000, respectively, and is roughly two times higher in males than in females. However, there are more female than male patients with cleft palate alone.
