Timing and methods of amblyopia treatment

Amblyopia is not self-healing, and the earlier the treatment of amblyopia, the better. In terms of visual development, children’s visual development is plastic until the age of 12, of which 0-3 years old is the critical period for amblyopia treatment, and 3-8 years old is the sensitive period for treatment. 12 years old and later for amblyopia treatment, the chance of vision recovery is getting smaller and smaller. There is no effective drug treatment for amblyopia. Amblyopia is mostly accompanied by refractive error (i.e. myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism), and the examination of amblyopia must be done with dilated pupils, in order to accurately determine the actual refractive error, so that accurate and suitable glasses can be dispensed. If the child has been diagnosed with amblyopia, it is recommended that parents should provide the child with glasses, insist on wearing glasses every day, and conduct an annual dilated medical eye exam to adjust the appropriate glasses, and also conduct amblyopia training under the guidance of a physician to help improve visual acuity and effectively treat amblyopia.
