Let the whole society pay attention to the children’s eyesight

–The 3rd Annual Meeting and Academic Exchange Conference of the Shaanxi Health Care Association’s Specialized Committee on Youth Vision Care and Optometry was held in Xi’an
From May 25 to 26, the 3rd Annual Meeting and Academic Exchange Conference of the Shaanxi Health Care Association Professional Committee on Youth Vision Care and Optometry was held in Xi’an Satellite Measurement and Control Center Range Moon Building. The theme of the conference was myopia and stereopsis. 200 delegates from inside and outside the province attended the conference. The latest research results and clinical experiences in myopia research and stereopsis at home and abroad were introduced through academic lectures and thematic discussions, drawing the attention of the whole society to the vision problems of children.       The conference was sponsored by the Shaanxi Health Care Association’s Professional Committee on Youth Vision Care and Optometry and organized by the Fourth Hospital of Shaanxi Province. Top domestic experts in ophthalmology and stereopsis were invited to hold academic lectures and panel discussions, and experts from inside and outside the province were invited to give academic reports on topics in the fields of myopia etiology investigation, prevention and control measures, corneal shaping, strabismic amblyopia treatment and progress of excimer laser devices. It has effectively promoted the development of youth vision care and optometry in our province.
At the opening ceremony of the congress, Professor Hui Yannian, a famous ophthalmologist, gave a brief overview of the development of optometry, spoke highly of youth vision care, and placed high hopes on this academic event. President Gao Biqi of the Fourth Hospital of Shaanxi Province, Director Liu Xiangyang of Beilin District Disabled Persons’ Federation and Principal Mu Jing of Xi’an Yuhang Primary School delivered speeches, fully affirming the work achievements of the professional committee in recent years and expressing their continuous support for the professional committee. The work report of Xu Yuan, the director of the professional committee, consisted of two written speeches with only a short explanation. The two written speeches, one is the Summary of Work and the other is the Initiative, which advocates the active participation of the conference delegates, calls for the attention of relevant departments, draws the attention of students’ parents, prohibits inappropriate early education, controls students’ near eye time, and fundamentally solves the problem of increasing incidence of myopia in China year by year. Director Bai Zhengfa of the Medical Department of the Fourth Hospital of Shaanxi Province presided over the opening ceremony. Also seated on the podium were invited experts: Professor Wang Qinmei, President of the Optometry Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, Vice President of the College of Optometry, Vice President of the Cornea Disease Group of the Chinese Academy of Ophthalmology, Clinical Professor and Doctoral Supervisor of the New England College of Optometry, and recipient of special allowance from the State Council, and Professor Wang Qinmei, former Director of Ophthalmology of the General Hospital of the People’s Liberation Army Navy, Standing Committee Member of the National Strabismus Amblyopia Prevention and Control Group, National Expert with Outstanding Contribution, China Professor Yan Shaoming, the inventor of Yan’s random dot stereopsis, the standard of stereopsis examination. President Liu Jintian of Shaanxi Biomedical College and Vice President Wang Zhihua of the Fourth Hospital of Shaanxi Province were also seated at the podium.
The academic exchange conference was held in four sessions. The first session was given by Prof. Qinmei Wang, who gave a lecture entitled “Progress in Myopic Eye Research”. The latest developments and treatment routines on animal models, pathogenesis, prevention and control of myopia were presented and analyzed in detail. It not only has a positive guiding meaning for clinicians’ medical practice, but also points out the direction of clinical research on myopia. During the interactive phase, the discussion was extremely lively. The second segment was a lecture by Prof. Yan Shaoming entitled “The Post-Stereopsis Era”. The lecture showed us a field that has been under-appreciated and poorly understood. With the development of science and technology, people’s understanding of stereopsis is increasing and stereopsis will become an important part of ophthalmic examination. The third segment consisted of two academic presentations by Associate Professor Yang Xiao from the Center of Optometry, Zhongshan Medical University, Guangzhou, China, one on “Defocus and Myopia” and the other on “Astigmatic Keratomileusis”. Some new breakthroughs in myopia research at the Eye Center of Sun Yat-sen Medical University were reported, and a new type of keratoplasty lens was introduced. An academic presentation entitled “Understanding the concept of amblyopia and 4D visual training” was given by Dr. Li La from the Ophthalmology Department of Beijing Saitan Hospital, which introduced an updated visual training method with significant effect on both amblyopia and strabismus. The fourth session, Liu Yes, Deputy Director of Ophthalmology of Shaanxi Province Hospital No. 4, gave an academic presentation titled “Youth Vision Survey”. He reported a set of preliminary survey data on the vision status of primary and secondary school students in Huanglong County of our province. This group of children, located deep in the mountains, had poorer vision than those in the provincial capital cities. Analyzing the reason, the initial consideration is related to the children’s pencil grip posture. Dr. Li Jinke from Xi’an Armed Police Hospital gave a special report entitled “Advances in Corneal Refractive Surgery Devices”. He introduced the progress of excimer laser, femtosecond laser and all-femtosecond laser surgery devices and surgical methods. Finally, Dr. Xu Yuan, Chairman of the Professional Committee, gave a lecture entitled “Cryptorchidism and Myopia”. The report started from the theoretical evolution of myopia ophthalmogenesis, made a generalization of the theories of myopia ophthalmogenesis, proposed to keep the once obsolete theories, and used various theories to classify the etiology of myopia. Myopia due to occult strabismus will be classified into one category, and rapid increase in myopia due to occult internal strabismus can be resolved by reading additional lenses. Each type of myopia can be classified by etiology to find the cause and take targeted measures. New standards were also proposed in terms of examination, updating the concept and expanding the scope of intervention.
The conference was conducted in a lively atmosphere, with many clinicians asking questions that had puzzled them for a long time and were resolved. Many doctors reflected that they learned a lot at this conference, improved their theoretical level, broadened their horizons and found their goals. It is suggested that this kind of high quality and practical academic activities should be held more often. After the meeting, many doctors were interested in the initiative put forward by the main committee member Xu Yuan. It is hoped that the problem of the yearly increase in the incidence of myopia in China can be fundamentally solved by actively advocating for the prohibition of inappropriate early education and the control of students’ eye time. Children cannot rely on doctors alone for their vision problems. It is necessary to mobilize all the forces that can be mobilized to make the whole society pay attention to children’s eyesight.
