Periodontal disease refers broadly to infectious diseases that occur in the periodontal supporting tissues, with plaque as the initiating factor. The broad definition of periodontal disease can also include all diseases that occur in the periodontal supporting tissues and may be unrelated to plaque. This time I will focus on periodontal supporting tissue diseases that are predominantly infectious. The 2009 UK Adult Dental Health Survey showed that 2/3 of the subjects had plaque on the dental surfaces or intraoral devices (restorative surfaces); 45% of the subjects had periodontal pockets larger than 4 mm and 9% had periodontal pockets larger than 6 mm. Epidemiological studies suggest that the proportion of patients with moderate to severe periodontitis can reach 15-20% of the total population in many populations of the world. In our clinical work we encounter many periodontal conditions with the presence of periodontal pockets greater than 6mm in full or partial dentition, so I believe that with the oral concept of most of our population nowadays, if we do a census, I believe it will be more serious than the British. So it is necessary for us to focus on periodontal health. First of all, let’s separate a few concepts: Gum disease is a disease that only involves the gum tissue, if it is only an inflammation of the gums, a basic “cleaning” can improve or cure the inflammation of the gums. Periodontal disease is an infectious disease that involves the gum tissue below the periodontal support tissue, and may involve loss of alveolar bone, periodontal membrane involvement, and heel displacement of the bonded epithelium (what we commonly refer to as “elongated teeth”). advise our patients to see a series of treatments promptly or you will watch your complete tooth fall out of your dental bed. Developmental or acquired abnormalities – receding gums or other membrane gum problems. This is a condition that needs to be dealt with by considering treatment options together with systemic and developmental issues. So regular oral examinations will help us to identify problems early, solve them, and secure our longevity with minimal expense and time.
