Diaphragmatic injuries alone are rare and are often combined with traumatic diaphragmatic hernias, which are more difficult to diagnose and can be easily misdiagnosed. If the patient has trauma to the chest and abdomen, a combination of chest x-ray, CT and abdominal ultrasound can usually reveal abnormalities. At the same time, gastrointestinal imaging and scans of the liver and spleen can further determine the extent of the diaphragmatic hernia. If necessary, thoracoscopy or laparoscopy can be performed to visualize the site and extent of diaphragmatic injury and the contents of the diaphragmatic hernia.
