There are many causes of astigmatism in the eye, most patients are born with it, while some patients may have acquired factors, such as scarring after corneal disease, or trauma to the eye and after surgery. Or there may be an apparent conjunctival pterygium. Astigmatism is usually corrected by optical means, including frame glasses and corneal contact lenses. In cases of high astigmatism, such as congenital astigmatism or post-surgical astigmatism, surgical treatment may be considered. Corneal wedge resection and corneal relaxation incision are commonly considered in clinical practice. Alternatively, corneal thermoplasty, which is the use of a thermocoagulator to do thermocoagulation on the flat meridian periphery of the cornea to increase corneal takedown in that area for the purpose of correcting astigmatism, can also be used, generally correcting 3D to 4D astigmatism. At present, modern laser keratomileusis has also reached a more ideal level for the treatment of corneal astigmatism, so a corneal topography can be performed to analyze the corneal surface and first make a preliminary estimate of the shape of the simulated toric cornea that needs to be removed to correct the corneal astigmatism in order to fully treat the astigmatism. The examination at the hospital is based on the treatment of different etiologies.
