Can green phlegm heal itself?

Sputum that is green usually does not heal on its own. Coughing up green sputum is mostly seen in diseases such as bronchitis, pneumonia or lung abscess caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa or anaerobic bacterial infection, which usually cannot be cured by itself and requires treatment to heal. If green sputum has appeared, it is recommended to visit the respiratory medicine department promptly to identify the cause and use the right medication. If Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the cause, antibiotics should be given immediately by intravenous infusion, such as imipenem, ceftazidime and piperacillin. If Pseudomonas aeruginosa is resistant to the above antibiotics, it can also be treated with aminoglycoside antibiotics, often amikacin or tobramycin. In addition to this, tuberculosis and lobar pneumonia may also cause green sputum during the dissipation phase, when green sputum is also not self-healing and the primary disease needs to be treated first. If tuberculosis is diagnosed, anti-tuberculosis treatment should be given first; during the dissipation period of lobar pneumonia, supportive treatment should be continued, and the situation of sputum being green can be gradually relieved by the above treatment. During the treatment period, patients are advised to take adequate rest, avoid straining and getting cold, and their diet should be light, with less and more meals recommended.
