What are the typical symptoms of manic-depressive disorder?

The typical symptoms of manic-depressive disorder present as recurrent or alternating manic/hypomanic episodes with depressive episodes.
In manic/hypomanic episodes, the patient is usually highly emotional, has increased speech and activity, and in a manic state the patient feels good about himself or herself and is not self-aware of his or her illness.
Depressive episodes, on the other hand, are usually characterised by depressed mood, reduced interest, reduced activity and delayed thinking and behaviour.
