Manic-depressive disorder is closely related to heredity, and the closer the blood relationship with the affected person, the higher the risk of developing the disorder. If one parent has bipolar I disorder, the chances of the child having the disorder are about 25%; if both parents have bipolar I disorder, the chances of the child having manic depression are 50%-75%.
