Is a blood sugar of 6.8 considered diabetes?

A blood sugar of 6.8 mmol/L is not considered diabetes mellitus, either in fasting blood sugar or in 2-hour post glycemic load blood sugar. However, a fasting blood glucose of 6.8 mmol/L needs to be controlled to avoid further progression. The latest diagnostic criteria for diabetes mellitus are the typical symptoms of “three more and one less” (drinking, urinating, eating and weight loss) plus a venous plasma glucose measurement of ≥11.1 mmol/L at any time of the day, a fasting blood glucose of ≥7.0 mmol/L, or a 2-hour glucose after glucose tolerance test of ≥11.1 mmol/L, which is considered to be the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is diagnosed when one of these three is met. If the fasting blood glucose is 6.8mmol/L, it is important to note that this state is likely to be pre-diabetic with impaired fasting glucose. The diagnostic criteria for impaired fasting blood glucose is fasting blood glucose between 6.1~7.0mmol/L, and 2 hours after the sugar load blood glucose <7.8mmol/L. If abnormal blood glucose is detected, it is recommended to consult a doctor in time and follow the doctor's instructions for examination and treatment, so as to avoid delaying the condition.
