High blood pressure measured through clothing may be related to the thickness of the clothing and the pressure developed between the clothing and the skin, resulting in a high blood pressure measurement. 1. Clothing thickness: the thickness of clothing has a certain consumption of cuff pressure, so that the cuff pressure on the brachial artery is reduced, resulting in inaccurate blood pressure values, but when the thickness of clothing is not more than 0.4cm, this difference is not clinically significant. 2. The pressure formed between the clothes and the skin: before the cuff is inflated, there is already a pressure formed by the clothes between the cuff and the skin, especially the clothes that are too thick and too tight or the sleeves are rolled up, and the blood pressure measured at this time is high. Try to adopt the standard method of blood pressure measurement when possible, i.e. bare arm or remove the upper garment, but in special circumstances such as measuring blood pressure in the cold season or for critically ill patients who are unable to take care of themselves, measurements can be taken across clothing with a thickness of no more than 0.4cm. Note that for special cases where the person measuring blood pressure through clothing has a critical value of hypertension or hypotension, or when there is doubt about the blood pressure measurement value, the blood pressure measurement must still be performed in accordance with the standard measurement method.
