Hemorrhoid attacks usually take a few days to subside

How long it takes for the swelling to go down after a hemorrhoid flare-up depends on the severity of the patient’s condition and no specific time can be determined. Hemorrhoid flare-ups are caused by straining to defecate and are short-lived, causing rapid local congestion and tissue edema for a short period of time. Although the flare-ups are short, the duration of swelling reduction is long, taking at least about 2 weeks. In the case of mild hemorrhoids, the patient can usually get relief on their own or take conservative treatment. In the case of moderate hemorrhoids, patients will need topical medication, either a topical cream or a topical herbal wash, which can gradually return to normal levels over a 2-3 week period. In the case of severe hemorrhoids, the swelling usually does not go down on its own and patients are advised to undergo surgery at a regular hospital’s anorectal surgery department. In addition, patients with hemorrhoids usually need to pay attention to eating more fruits and vegetables to prevent constipation. The diet is based on easily digestible semi-liquid food, avoid drinking alcohol and eating spicy, stimulating food, while patients should avoid squatting for too long and insist on doing daily anal lifting exercises.
