Post-operative rehabilitation program after high tibial osteotomy

Postoperative functional exercises (a) On the day of surgery After the anesthesia subsides, start to move the toes and ankle joint; if the pain is not obvious, try to contract the quadriceps muscle, i.e., tense and relax the anterior thigh muscles. (B) 1 day after surgery: 1. Ankle pump (anterior and posterior calf muscle group exercises) – forceful, slow, full range flexion and extension of the ankle joint, 20 times/group, 5 groups/day. 2. Quadriceps isometric exercises – i.e. thigh muscle tensing and relaxation. Should be done as much as possible without increasing pain. (C) 2 days after surgery: Ankle pump: as before. Quadriceps isometric exercises (anterior thigh group muscle strength exercises) – tense and hold for 5 seconds, relax for 2 seconds once, 100 reps per set, 3-5 sets/day. Straight Leg Raise – Extend the knee with maximum force, lift the leg straight to a 30 degree hip flexion position and hold to the limit. If pain is evident, pause. Note: Exercises alternate bilaterally for better results. (iv) After 3 days postoperative: Continue the above exercises, increase the intensity and frequency. And begin to sit on the bedside knee flexion, practice joint mobility, and gradually increase the number of times (5 times / day to start); 3 months after surgery to start walking with weight on crutches and gradually increase the amount, while strengthening the quadriceps training. P.S. The affected limb can be elevated on top of the air cushion (the air cushion is placed slightly below the mid-calf) during the interval of exercises: 1. it is conducive to wound swelling 2. it is conducive to the practice of knee extension.
