People with alcohol abuse and chronic alcoholism are at risk of developing Klebsiella pneumoniae infections, as are the elderly, infants and children, people with underlying medical conditions (e.g. diabetes, malignancy, AIDS), as well as people who have been hospitalised for long periods of time (especially in ICU units), post-surgery, misuse of antibiotics or who have undergone tracheal intubation.
