What do TMJ patients need to be aware of?

For patients suffering from TMJ dysfunction, some habits that aggravate the load on the joint, such as chewing gum, biting fingernails, clenching and grinding teeth, should be avoided. These habits are developed by patients in their daily life, such as chewing gum repeatedly, some patients can chew it for a morning, while some patients will clench their teeth when driving, concentrating or nervous, all of these aggravate the damage to TMJ. 1, maintain the correct jaw position: this is also the jaw rest position that we educate patients to maintain. Some patients may ask: How long do I need to maintain this position? This is the position or posture that the mandible holds during normal rest, which means that the patient needs to try to maintain it all the time outside of eating and sleeping. This is because this is the position where the muscles around our joints are most relaxed and where there is the least amount of pressure within the joint. For patients who are used to clenching their teeth, it will be difficult at the beginning of learning the resting position, but after 2-3 weeks of adaptation, they can gradually get used to it. 2.When breathing through the nose, the upper and lower lips are gently closed. 3.When yawning, the tongue should be held against the upper jaw to avoid opening the mouth wide. Many patients may reflect that yawning is not “cool” enough, but the wide open mouth itself is a damage to our joints, for example, many patients will not be able to close their mouths when they open their mouths wide, that is, temporomandibular joint dislocation. These are the behaviors that have damage to the joints. 4, avoid sleeping on your stomach. Sleeping on your stomach will press on our temporomandibular joint and increase the burden on the joint. 5.Don’t use your hand to hold your chin while resting. 6.Chew bilaterally: When eating, try to chew on both sides at the same time, so that the force on both sides of the jaw is even, which is conducive to maintaining good joint function. 7, eat soft food, do not eat nuts or difficult to bite food. For example, sugar cane, small walnuts, etc., should avoid using the mouth to bite directly. 8, food cut into small pieces to eat. 9, warm water rinse mouth: good for relaxing our chewing muscles.
