Common causes of right upper abdominal pain include acute cholecystitis, gallbladder stones, common bile duct stones, acute obstructive purulent cholangitis, biliary ascariasis, congenital cystic dilatation of the common bile duct, gallbladder torsion, liver abscess, post-traumatic liver injury and rupture, lobar pneumonia of the lower right lung, herpes zoster of the right chest wall, acute myocardial infarction, etc. Some patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, gastric carcinoma and bile duct carcinoma may also present with chronic pain in the right upper abdomen.
