How to use medical compression stockings?

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common disease in which patients may have varicose veins in the lower extremities, subcutaneous nodules, hyperpigmentation, bruising dermatitis with a feeling of heaviness in the lower extremities, pruritus, and even skin oozing or venous ulcers. Medical compression stockings (MCS) play an important role in the non-surgical treatment of varicose veins with elastic compression. Medical compression stockings are designed to provide different pressure from the ankle to the calf to the knee and up to the thigh. After wearing medical elastic stockings, the pressure gradient difference is given externally to reduce the venous pressure in the lower limbs, reduce the pressure difference in the tissues, facilitate reabsorption, reduce edema, facilitate lymphatic fluid reflux, reduce local inflammatory reaction in the lower limbs, and promote venous reflux through sequential gradient pressure treatment with medical elastic stockings. How to choose the suitable medical compression stockings? The pressure gradient of medical elastic stockings plays a crucial role in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency of the lower limbs, and different pressure gradients have different therapeutic effects for different patients: 1. Secondary pressure gradient (23-32) mmHg: patients with varicose veins stage C2-C4, deep vein insufficiency, after venous stripping surgery, after endovenous laser coagulation surgery, varicose veins with lower limb swelling during pregnancy; 3. Tertiary pressure gradient (34-46) mmHg. Patients with varicose veins stage C4-C6, post-deep vein thrombosis syndrome, traumatic edema, congenital venous malformations of the lower extremities; 4. Grade IV pressure gradient >48 mmHg: patients with fixed edema, irreversible lymphedema. Thigh-length type is advocated at the beginning of treatment, knee-length type can be used in other periods, and pantyhose type is used less frequently. Wearing time of medical elastic stockings The wearing time of medical elastic stockings is generally recommended to be worn when getting up and walking, and can be taken off at night when resting. If you don’t feel too tight, overheated or allergic when wearing them, it is recommended to wear them for a long time, and patients with venous ulcers are recommended to wear them for life. Who can’t use medical compression stockings? Because the wearing of medical compression stockings adds extra pressure to the lower limbs, they are not suitable for certain people, and even aggravate the original disease if worn. For example, they should be used with the following diseases: lower extremity atherosclerosis with intermittent claudication, acute dermatitis, exudation or eczema, skin breakdown with purulent infection, acute phase of deep vein thrombosis, post-arterial bypass grafting of the lower extremity, and decompensated congestive heart failure.
