Can you get rabies if you are scratched by a dog?

Whether you get rabies after being scratched by a dog cannot be generalized and needs to be analyzed on a case-by-case basis. The rabies virus is mainly transmitted through bites. If a dog carries the rabies virus and the patient is scratched by it, the local skin may be contaminated with the virus carried in the saliva, and there is a risk of rabies if the rabies vaccine is not administered in a timely manner at the hospital’s general surgery department. Once rabies strikes, the rate of death is close to 100%. If scratched by a healthy dog, i.e., the dog is vaccinated according to the procedure and does not carry the rabies virus itself, the patient usually does not get rabies. Because rabies is more dangerous and preventable than curable, if scratched by a sick dog, it is recommended that rabies vaccination be given as soon as possible to avoid serious consequences.
