What is the LASIK procedure like?

LASIK Procedure Procedure: Before surgery, the surgeon will perform a detailed eye examination. If the patient is wearing contact lenses, he/she will have to suspend them before the examination. The eye examination will be more detailed than the eyeglass prescription, including measurement of refraction, best visual acuity, corneal curvature, shape and thickness, and microscopic examination of the eye and the exterior of the eye. The pupil will also be dilated with eye drops to examine the patient’s retina. The pupil will be dilated and the eye will become slightly photophobic and blurry when looking at close objects. Surgery: Before the surgery, the patient’s eyes are first disinfected and then anesthetized with local anesthetic drops. Afterwards, the patient will lie flat on the surgical bed and the surgeon will use an eyelid speculum to hold the eye open. During the procedure, the patient is awake and needs to stare at a target light.
