Most patients with infectious mononucleosis have a good prognosis and are usually cured in 1-2 weeks, and some patients can recover spontaneously even without treatment. Infectious mononucleosis is an acute proliferative infectious disease of the monocyte-macrophage system. The infecting agent is the EBV, and the main clinical symptoms are persistent fever, enlarged lymph nodes, pharyngitis, rash, and hepatosplenomegaly. Infectious mononucleosis is self-limiting, with a general autoimmune kill time of 1-3 weeks. Symptomatic management is the main measure in clinical workup. Although infectious mononucleosis is self-limiting, it can be prolonged in some patients, eventually leading to complications, and should therefore be monitored regularly.
