What kind of patients are suitable for facial contouring?

Facial contour reshaping refers to the use of surgical (osteotomy, bone grinding) or interventional methods, and according to the principles of facial aesthetics, the head and face of the bone and soft tissues to increase or decrease, shaping, to change the appearance of the facial contour, to improve the aesthetic means of the face. Facial contour reshaping mainly focuses on the bony structures and some soft tissue structures that affect the external contour of the face in the frontal or lateral view. These include: bilateral zygomatic bones and zygomatic arches, bilateral buccal soft tissues, bilateral mandibular angle (ectropion), bilateral mandibular buccal cortex, and vertical and left/right oriented forms of the chin in the frontal view; and forehead, dorsum of the nose, the protuberance of the upper and lower lips, the angle of the mandibular angle of the bilateral mandibular angle, and anterior/posterior oriented forms of the chin in the lateral view. Therefore, any abnormalities in the appearance of the above bony structures can be considered as indications for facial contouring surgery from an aesthetic point of view. Upper 1/3 of the face: mainly for the effect of frontal and temporal fullness on the facial appearance, most of the candidates come to the clinic because of the poor fullness of the frontal and temporal areas. Indications for the middle 1/3 of the face: indications include excessive length of the middle 1/3 of the face, anterior or posterior protrusion of the middle 1/3 of the face, high zygomatic bone and zygomatic arch deformity, too much or too little soft tissue in the cheeks, abnormal angle of nasolabial angle, abnormal nasolabial sulcus morphology, and abnormal protrudence of the upper lip. Indications for lower 1/3 of the face: the lower 1/3 of the face is too long or asymmetrical, the lower lip protrusion is abnormal, bilateral mandibular angular hypertrophy, mandibular deviation, left and right facial asymmetry, the height of the lower edge of the mandibular is inconsistent, the chin morphology is abnormal (chin protruding, chin retracting, chin deviation), the chin-lip groove morphology is abnormal. At present, there is no clear opinion on what kind of patients are suitable for facial contour reshaping, because everyone has abnormalities in facial contour to a greater or lesser extent, or everyone can be an adaptable individual for facial contour reshaping, but each individual’s desire for beauty and requirements are not the same. Therefore, the need for facial contouring varies from person to person. Some candidates do have aesthetic defects and would like to improve their facial shape through surgery, while some candidates do not have abnormalities in their facial contour but still require a change in their facial shape. Therefore, when designing a specific surgical plan for a patient, it is important to consider the patient’s subjective requirements, aesthetic, cultural qualities, occupation, age, psychology, and other factors at the same time.
