Red Eye Prevention and Treatment

The medical term for pink eye is acute catarrhal conjunctivitis, and its transmission is mainly through contact. It is often transmitted through contact with objects stained by the patient’s eye secretions or tears (such as towels, handkerchiefs, washbasins, water, etc.), shaking hands with red-eye patients or rubbing eyes with dirty hands, etc., all of which can be infected and eventually cause an epidemic of red-eye. In summer and autumn, the hot weather makes it easy for bacteria to grow and multiply, which can very easily cause a pandemic. Now that we know the main ways of transmission of red-eye, it is perfectly possible to prevent and protect against epidemics.   (1) If red-eye is detected, it should be promptly isolated and all utensils should be used separately, preferably washed and dried before use. (2) Pay attention to hand hygiene. Develop the good habit of washing your hands regularly, do not rub your eyes with dirty hands, and cut your nails regularly. (3) When suffering from pink eye, in addition to active treatment, you should go to public places less often and not use shared towels, washbasins, etc. Some people think that one look at a red-eye patient, you will get red-eye, which is not scientifically justified, and currently only through direct or indirect contact can get sick. The symptoms of pink eye are: conjunctival congestion in one or both eyes, a large amount of mucopurulent discharge, but generally does not affect vision. If not treated in time, some of them turn into chronic conjunctivitis. The actual treatment is as follows: (1) At the beginning, the eyelids and conjunctiva are swollen, so you can apply cold compresses 3 times a day for 20 minutes each time. When one eye has red eye and the other eye is not yet infected, the healthy eye should be prevented from being infected. When flushing or dropping eye medication, the head should be tilted to the affected side, and when sleeping, the head should also be tilted to the affected side to prevent secretions from flowing into the healthy eye. (2) When the secretion increases, rinse the eyes with saline or warm water 3 to 4 times a day to clean the secretions in the eyes. It should be noted that when suffering from pink eye, do not cover the eye, because after covering the eye, the temperature in the eye increases, which is conducive to the growth and reproduction of germs, and the secretions are not easily discharged, but make the inflammation worse. (3) Eye drops can be levofloxacin eye drops, interferon eye drops, ganciclovir eye drops or other anti-inflammatory eye drops, once every 2 hours, before going to bed with anti-inflammatory eye ointment. Some people, when suffering from pink eye, ask the doctor to give anti-inflammatory injections to treat, in fact, it is not necessary, the role of anti-inflammatory for pink eye is very small.
