Are rheumatologic diseases really incurable?

We encounter many patients with rheumatic immune diseases who have difficulty adhering to long-term medication. In every case that we see in the clinic, we have to painstakingly explain to them what rheumatic immune diseases are and why they require long-term medication. However, there are still many patients who do not know enough about the importance of long-term medication. As soon as the pain disappears and the symptoms improve, they do not come to the clinic, or they reduce their own medication or stop taking it, resulting in relapse, aggravation, or even difficulty in treatment. Some patients are considered to be “incurable” and lose confidence in treatment, and some even do not treat. It is heartbreaking to see these conditions. The treatment process of rheumatic immune diseases is mainly divided into two categories: the first category is “improper treatment” These patients are often not very serious when the disease starts, only some joint pain, muscle pain, a few parts of the rash, or repeated fever, etc., to the hospital examination, the abnormal indicators are not a lot. At this time, many patients are treated in some clinics or small hospitals with non-rheumatology specialties. After giving some anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving drugs, they “get better”: that is, the joints do not hurt anymore, or other symptoms disappear. The patient does not care anymore and does not take the medicine. However, in this case, the disease is not cured, but the symptoms are controlled by anti-inflammatory drugs, but once there are other triggers, such as cold, fatigue, especially long-term sleepless overtime, sun exposure, etc., it is easy to trigger the disease. When the disease comes back, the symptoms may be worse than the initial one, and the doctor may increase the medication to control the symptoms. However, many patients who have recurrent attacks are satisfied with pain relief treatment and stop taking medication as soon as the pain is gone and there are no more symptoms. If this is repeated, the attacks will become more and more frequent, more and more organs will be involved, and the disease will become more and more serious, and doctors will have to use large doses of drugs to control the disease, but the side effects of the drugs will increase, and doctors often have to repeatedly weigh the effects of the drugs against the side effects. The treatment effect will become worse and worse, and finally become incurable. The second category is “correct treatment type” rheumatic immune disease after the onset of the disease, regardless of whether the symptoms are light or heavy, according to our current level of medical care, more than 90% of patients doctors have the means to control the disease. The key difference is that after controlling the disease, you must follow the doctor’s instructions to take the medication on time and not reduce or stop it without authorization. Some friends are worried about side effects because “I’m scared because I see a lot of side effects written on the instructions”. In fact, there is no need to worry so much. Although it is said that “medicine is three kinds of poison”, as long as it is under the guidance of a specialist and regular review, the side effects are nothing to be afraid of. In fact, what is really scary is that those drugs that do not have side effects written down, patients mistakenly think that there are no side effects, long-term use of liver and kidney injury is not aware of. If you can follow the instructions of your specialist and take your medication on time, and be persistent, even if there are any triggers that lead to a relapse, the condition will not be too serious due to the control of the medication, and it will be easy for the doctor to control. Slowly due to the long-term control of the drug, the symptoms of the disease slowly disappeared, no organ involvement or the degree of involvement is small, the drug dose is reduced, the side effects are gone, and you can resume your normal life, how happy is life at this time!
