Can gallstones be expelled by medication

Most gallstones cannot be expelled by medication. A few stones that are located in the lower part of the common bile duct and are small in diameter may be expelled by medication. The gallbladder and bile ducts are collectively referred to as the biliary system, and stones that form within the biliary system are called gallstones. The stones are cholesterol stones or mixed cholesterol-based stones and black bile pigment stones. When the stone is located in the lower part of the bile duct, and the diameter is less than 1cm, you can take some drugs such as anti-inflammatory bile tablets, gallbladder capsule to promote bile duct peristalsis, it is possible to make the stone discharged into the duodenum and then discharged out of the body. However, since the process of stone removal may scratch the bile ducts, it is not recommended to use drugs for stone removal. Usually, most of the stones cannot be discharged by drugs. The diameter of the cystic duct is about 4mm, the diameter of the common bile duct is about 8mm, and there is a sphincter of Oddi’s at the lower end of the common bile duct, which is equivalent to a valve, and gallstones are often too large in diameter to pass through it smoothly. Patients with large gallstones, a large number of gallstones or biliary colic are advised to undergo surgery as soon as possible. Pharmacologic lithotripsy is only indicated for patients with very small stones and is not clinically advocated. Patients with large stones or clinical symptoms are still recommended to go to the hospital for surgical treatment under the supervision of a doctor.
