Enlarged tonsils can be classified into three degrees: enlarged tonsils degree I, enlarged tonsils degree II and enlarged tonsils degree III. The criteria for classification are based on the degree of enlargement of the tonsils. Generally, enlargement of the tonsils beyond the palatoglossal arch but not beyond the palatopharyngeal arch is degree I; enlargement beyond the palatopharyngeal arch and less than the midline of the posterior pharyngeal wall is degree II; enlargement beyond the midline of the posterior pharyngeal wall or when the left and right tonsils are in contact with each other is degree III.
