Whether it is normal for the upper teeth to encircle the lower teeth depends on the specific case. If the upper teeth encircle the lower teeth more than 1/3, it is an abnormal situation and is a kind of malocclusion, called deep overlap (dentition), which needs orthodontic treatment. If the upper teeth wrap around the lower teeth more than 1/3, orthodontic treatment is usually recommended in the clinic, but there is a certain age limit for orthodontic treatment, and it is better to do orthodontic treatment before 18 years old. If the upper teeth do not encircle the lower teeth by more than 1/3, it can be treated without treatment, which may affect the aesthetics, but does not affect the normal chewing function. If the lower teeth are encircling the upper teeth, it is commonly referred to as “enameled teeth”, which is also a dental malformation and requires active treatment. The earlier the intervention, the better the results. Parents should not neglect treatment because of the child’s young age. Orthodontic treatment usually takes two years, during which the braces and teeth should be cleaned to avoid the growth of bacteria.
