80% of rotator cuff injuries do not require surgery and can be cured by non-surgical treatments (physiotherapy, rehabilitation etc.). However, if the symptoms of rotator cuff injury persist for 6 to 12 months, if there is weakness in raising the arm on the affected upper limb, or if both active and passive movements of the affected upper limb are limited and conservative treatment has failed, then surgery should be performed. The exact timing of surgery needs to be determined by the sports medicine orthopaedic surgeon according to the patient’s specific condition.
