There are many ways to examine the vegetative nerves, including: cutaneous vasodilatation reaction, lying position test, closed-eye examination and so on. 1. Skin vasodilatation reaction: When the skin of the arm area is scratched with a cotton swab, sympathetic nervous tension occurs when the skin is stimulated, the skin blood vessels contract and the skin becomes pale. When the parasympathetic nerves are tensed, the blood vessels of the skin are dilated and the skin color becomes flushed. 2. Lying and standing test: Measure the patient’s heart rate and blood pressure in lying and standing positions respectively. If the difference between the patient’s blood pressure in lying and standing positions is more than 10mmHg and the difference between the patient’s heart rate is more than 10-12 times, it indicates that the patient’s sympathetic excitability is enhanced. 3. Let the patient close his/her eyes and check whether the eyelids of the patient keep fluttering when he/she closes his/her eyes and whether it is difficult for the upper and lower eyelids to close peacefully; if this happens, it indicates that the patient’s vegetative nervous system has been disturbed.
