Temporomandibular joint disorder syndrome, also known as temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome, is a common clinical condition in dentistry. It manifests as popping and pain in the temporomandibular joint, restricted mouth movement, and joint locking. Often, when the mouth is closed or accidentally chewing hard food, there will be transient severe pain and rattling, sometimes light and sometimes heavy, recurrent attacks, at first only for one side, but over time can affect the opposite side. In severe cases, the patient cannot even eat normally and can only eat a liquid diet. A few patients may also suffer from tinnitus, dizziness, headache, etc. due to nerve compression. The course of the disease is long and it is easy to recur. It occurs in young adults between 20 and 40 years of age. The cause of this disease is still not completely clear, but it is mostly due to acute and chronic injury to the mandibular joint (external force or frequent chewing of hard objects, etc.) that causes injury to the joint disc and aseptic inflammation of the joint, or over-excitation and inhibition of the muscles around the joint, which causes the joint to lose balance, or spasm and pain of the muscles around the temporomandibular joint due to poor dental occlusion, or congenital malformation of the temporomandibular joint, which causes the joint to become uncoordinated during movement. or congenital malformation of the temporomandibular joint that causes the joint to become uncoordinated during movement. In Chinese medicine, TMJ disorder syndrome is classified as “cheek pain”, “jaw pain”, “mouth silence and inability to open”, etc. It is believed that due to a variety of factors such as emotional and mental disorders, poor diet or chewing habits, trauma, and the joint itself. It is believed that due to a combination of factors such as poor emotional and mental health, poor diet or chewing habits, trauma and the joint itself, the body’s qi and blood are weak, the camp is not strong, and the wind, cold, damp and heat evils take advantage of the deficiency and block the muscles, meridians, tendons and bones, resulting in stagnation of qi and blood, the meridians are not accessible, and the pain is caused by the lack of nourishment of the tendons and veins, resulting in unfavorable joint movement and restricted opening. Since the temporomandibular joint pain is limited and deep, acupuncture is used to treat the disease according to the theory of “where medicine does not reach, needles reach” in Chinese medicine. The principle of treatment is to relax the tendons and activate the collaterals and smooth the joints. Commonly used acupuncture points are Shangguan, Xiaguan, Jiao Sun, Gong Gong, Cataract, Zygomatic s, and Hegu. The patient is placed in a sitting or supine position, and the mouth is closed when acupuncture is performed at the Shimonoseki point, and each point is required to obtain qi. If combined with local microwave therapy is more effective, generally using a slight heat or no heat, wearing a metal eye protection mesh treatment for 20 minutes.
