What does it mean if you have been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and your disease is in a limited stage?
You need to first understand the following points.
1. the extent of the tumor
SCLC is more malignant and prone to early metastasis. Limited-stage SCLC is relatively early stage when the tumor is located in one side of the chest and can be “fit” into a radiation treatment field.
2.
2. Life expectancy
The median survival for patients with limited-stage SCLC is 16 to 24 months, with a 5-year survival rate of 14%. However, there are many patients who can survive for a long time, so please do not be discouraged. It is important to treat aggressively and follow up on time.
3.
3. Treatment options
The main treatment options for SCLC are chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Surgical patients: Patients in the earliest stages can be treated surgically. However, less than 5% of patients diagnosed with SCLC are operable; even if the lesion is completely removed, 4-6 weeks of chemotherapy is usually required after surgery.
Patients without surgery: Concurrent radiotherapy is usually preferred and most patients have some control.
How to deal with discomfort in treatment: Modern medicine has ways to relieve all kinds of discomfort from cancer itself and from treatment. Therefore, please do not tolerate it, but actively seek countermeasures with your doctor.
Clinical trials: SCLC is not usually amenable to targeted therapy. If there is an opportunity to join a new drug clinical trial, we recommend that you actively consider it.
4. Relapse
Even if your disease is under control, it is important that you follow your doctor’s orders for regular review. Because SCLC has a high risk of recurrence.
5. Recovery
You need to adopt a healthy lifestyle. If you smoke, make sure you quit.
