A painful dermatomal rash in the ear canal and around the ear is considered to be ear herpes zoster. The disease is caused by a virus that has invaded the nerves causing more intense ear pain symptoms. In addition to herpes in the external auditory canal and tympanic membrane, a small number of cases may be associated with facial paralysis and sensorineural deafness.
