What are the common causes of facial muscle spasm?

The initial symptom of facial myospasm is eyelid jumping, which is also known as “left eye jumping for money, right eye jumping for disaster”, so it usually does not attract people’s attention, but after a period of time it develops into facial myospasm, even to the corners of the mouth, and in serious cases, even to the neck. Facial muscle spasm can be divided into two types, one is primary facial muscle spasm, one is secondary facial muscle spasm, that is, facial muscle spasm generated by the sequelae of facial paralysis. The two types can be distinguished from each other in terms of symptoms. In primary facial myospasm, it can occur even at rest, and the spasm is relieved after a few minutes and is uncontrolled; in facial myospasm produced by the sequelae of facial palsy, it is produced only when doing actions such as blinking and raising eyebrows. The common causes of facial muscle spasm: 1. Most patients with facial muscle spasm are due to normal vascular cross compression, such as compression of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery, vertebral nerve artery, posterior inferior cerebellar artery, arteriovenous malformation, etc., which compresses the facial nerve, thus causing abnormalities in facial nerve conduction, resulting in paroxysmal spasms in the muscles they innervate. 2, a small number of patients with facial spasm may be caused by facial neuritis and other causes of nerve demyelination pathological changes have not returned to normal, there is part of the myelin sheath loss, resulting in the expansion of the electrical conduction of the facial nerve, causing similar facial muscle seizure twitching, thus triggering the occurrence of facial spasm. Occasionally, there are also brain tumors, aneurysms and other lesions that compress the facial nerve root. A very small number of patients with facial muscle spasms have facial muscle spasms after surgery or traumatic tumors. It may be related to the recovery process of facial nerve and other brain nerve short circuit, other brain nerve excitement will also appear when there is a side of the facial muscle twitching. 5, secondary facial muscle spasm refers to the existence of clear predisposing diseases, such as facial nerve trauma or facial neuritis caused by peripheral facial palsy, in the recovery period can cause facial muscle linked movement, characteristics similar to facial muscle spasm; some tumors or inflammation of the pontocerebellar angle involving the facial nerve root can also cause the occurrence of this disease.
