What are the characteristics of neonatal bilirubin encephalopathy?

It occurs mostly in newborns within one week of birth and is more common in premature babies. Bilirubin encephalopathy is insidious and not easily detected in premature babies, and is often associated with neurological symptoms in full-term babies.
