Does weight loss affect menstrual flow?

It is possible for weight loss to affect the amount of menstruation, even to the point of causing amenorrhea. A woman’s menstruation can be affected by many factors, including recent environmental changes, mood swings, stress, strenuous exercise, dieting and weight loss. If your period is delayed or decreases significantly during the weight loss process, you should first check if you are pregnant, either through a urine pregnancy test or a blood test for HCG. If pregnancy is not confirmed, the thickness of the endometrium should be measured by ultrasound to determine if medication is needed to regulate menstruation. Weight loss is not recommended through excessive dieting, but can be achieved through proper diet control as well as proper exercise.
