A glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) test is critical if you have diabetes or if your doctor thinks you are at risk for developing diabetes.
What is the HbA1c test?
It is a test to find out if you have diabetes.
This is the main way to know if you have diabetes and how to treat it. People may have heard of this test by other names, such as hemoglobin A1c, HbA1c, or glycated hemoglobin test.
HbA1c reflects the average blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months, and the results will tell you how well your diabetes treatment plan is working or if you have diabetes.
Like a baseball player’s season batting average, a single game is not a complete indication of how a player will perform over the course of a career. Nor do the results of a test on a given day give a complete picture of how well a treatment program is working.
If you have diabetes, you should have an HbA1c test at least twice a year, which does not require fasting and can be done at any time of the day (before or after eating).
Why is HbA1c testing important?
Why is HbA1c testing important?
Red blood cells have a substance called hemoglobin, which carries oxygen from the lungs to cells throughout the body. Glucose gets into the red blood cells and encapsulates the hemoglobin molecules. The more glucose there is in the blood, the more hemoglobin molecules are encapsulated.
HbA1c measures how much of the hemoglobin is coated by glucose. higher HbA1c levels are associated with a higher risk of abnormalities, which means that the blood glucose control program is not as good as it could be.
How often do I need to be tested?
Your doctor may recommend HbA1c testing as soon as you are diagnosed with diabetes. The test will also be ordered if your doctor thinks you may have diabetes. The test will set a baseline level so that the patient’s blood glucose control is known.
Subsequently, the frequency of testing depends on several factors, such as:
- Type of diabetes;
- Glucose control;
- Treatment regimen.
If you are pre-diabetic, which means you are at higher risk of developing diabetes, you may need to be tested once a year.
If you have type 2 diabetes, are not using insulin, and your blood glucose levels are usually within your target range, you may need to be tested twice a year.
If you have type 1 diabetes, you may need to be tested 3 to 4 times a year.
If you have type 2 diabetes and use insulin or are unable to maintain blood glucose levels within your goal range, you may need to be tested 4 times a year.
More frequent testing may also be needed if your diabetes plan changes or if you start a new medication.
How do I interpret the results of my HbA1c test?
HbA1c values are in the form of percentages. Those without diabetes should be below 5.7%.
A result of 5.7% to 6.4% indicates prediabetes.
For people with diabetes, the usual treatment goal is 7% or lower. In people with diabetes who have not been treated for a long time, the level may be above 8%.
If you have diabetes and your blood glucose level is higher than your goal, your doctor may change your treatment plan to lower your blood glucose level.
