Atrial premature beats are atrial agitation originating from any part of the atrium other than the sinus node. They are a common clinical arrhythmia and need to be treated aggressively if there are significant symptoms. Atrial premature beats can be seen in normal people and tend to occur after stress, anxiety or alcohol consumption. It can also be seen in patients with organic heart disease, such as hypertensive heart disease, pulmonary heart disease. Premature atrial contractions can also occur with the use of certain drugs such as digitalis or electrolyte disorders such as hypokalemia. For occasional atrial premature beats or those with insignificant symptoms, no special treatment is usually needed. Those with frequent episodes and obvious symptoms should be treated under the guidance of a doctor. In general, healthy people should avoid stress, fatigue, anxiety and other emotions, quit smoking, limit or avoid caffeine and alcohol intake.
